Greetings Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well as summer winds down and we transition to fall. As excited as I am that school is returning to full in-person learning and all of the fall sports are back, I can’t help but be reminded that we are still in a pandemic and we all need to make sure we are taking care of ourselves, our family, and our departments. Sadly, I just had a 52-year-old former reserve officer of mine pass from COVID, and I have three officers and staff out with the virus. The email we received from Director Granderson and the effects the virus is having on DPSST are further examples that we are not back to “normal” yet, as much as I would like to be so.

As you are aware, or will be as soon as you can read your emails from Kevin, we have needed to make a few changes to our upcoming Fall Conference scheduled for September 29 and 30. DPSST will not be able to host our conference and board meetings. We still want to have the event in-person but to offer the ability to “view” the presentations of the trainers at a later date via a video format. This will help ensure that OACP members and OSSA members are getting those valuable and required “leadership” training hours. As much as I would love to have everyone back together in-person, I know this is not totally possible or even feasible in some agencies that have travel restrictions in place.

Thank you so much to Kevin, Marie, all of the Victory Group Staff, Chief Hicks, and Chief Rash as they work diligently on all of the last-minute changes to our Fall Conference. I look forward to seeing many of you in Keizer on the 29th and 30th and still hold out optimistic hope to see even more of you at ELTS and the Annual Conference in 2022. Take care of yourselves physically and mentally as we keep moving forward.

The OACP congratulates Chief Tracy Wood (Gold Beach PD) on his retirement on August 25, 2021. Chief Wood served in law enforcement for 18 years. He began his career as a correctional officer at Curry County Sheriff's Office. Approximately 10 years ago he began working for Gold Beach PD, quickly promoted to sergeant, and became the Chief around 4 years ago. The OACP was told he was a great leader and always put his people first. Chief Wood has been a member of the OACP since 2014. Best wishes on a happy retirement!
