Hermiston PD has done an excellent job connecting with their community. One strategy has been to engage in an open and transparent way. They've done this by producing an extensive and professional Annual Report that communicates their agency's mission, vision and values, along with a message from Chief Jason Edmiston. Please Click here to view this document. They also hold quarterly Public Safety Committee meetings where citizens are encouraged to attend.

In addition, they've participated in National Night Out in a very creative way, partnering with the local newspaper by having them provide clues for a hidden NNO medallion. The winner enjoys ice cream provided by the city's mayor, council, fire and police departments.

HPD also finds ways to serve their community by holding canned food drive contests at the schools, which helps support their biggest outreach (started back in 1969); the Christmas Express Program. Along with having local schools and area farmers participate, they receive willing help from city employees to put together 500 food boxes! See video and photos below.

Once the pandemic is over, HPD plans to create a hashtag (possibly #ridewithHPD) that encourages people to come ride with their officers so their neighbors can have a better understanding of what it is their department does. Keep the creative ideas for engaging with your community coming, Hermiston PD!

 OACP News

Saturday, October 24 is Take Back Day. OACP Sponsor, Rali-OR, is eager to partner with agencies in Oregon to provide disposal drug pouches, and they are willing to send them to any agency interested in participating in Take Back Day. Reach out to Sophie LeRoux at [email protected] if you are interested.

If you have another event already scheduled, when you would like to provide pouches to your community members, Rali-OR wants to make them available to help you serve your community in this important way.

Due to Covid-19, National Night Out's new date is Tuesday, October 6. Pictures above are from past NNO when Stayton and Wilsonville PDs participated.

We encourage Oregon agencies to participate in this national community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships.
