March 16, 2022

Hello OACP Family,

I can’t believe that this is my last message as your President! It literally seems like it was yesterday when Chief Jim Ferraris handed me the reigns as President. Of course, that was actually back on May 7, 2021, in Hood River at a Board Meeting and mini-banquet due to our in-person Annual Conference being canceled because of COVID restrictions. But here we are closing in on a year later. I think things are better(ish) or are getting better(ish) and I remain optimistic for our communities, state, and country.

My term as president will not be quite a year in length due to everything being pushed back but I have a lot to reflect on. Though I am proud to have served as the OACP President I am disappointed that I wasn’t able to do more. As I progressed through the chairs of the Executive Board, I had such high aspirations to get out to each of the Districts, visit member agencies, and interact with more of the members. Between pandemic restrictions, staffing issues in my small department, and other factors beyond my control my aspirations faded and were not met. What I did get to do was appoint numerous members to many different positions both inside and outside the Association to many committees, workgroups, and taskforces to help continue the great work our Association does and to be a strong voice around the state for public safety. Of course, the reason for all of these appointments and assignments was due to so many of our colleagues retiring or changing career paths out of the law enforcement field. But with change comes new members, new ideas, fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and excitement as we usher in a new generation of law enforcement leaders and Association members.

Speaking of new members, I hope to see many of our new members and to be able to introduce them to many of you at our Annual Conference April 12 - 15 in Bend! Marie tells me we currently have over 120 registered to attend. There is still time to register, and I would love to see you all there at our first event without any health restrictions. Don’t forget there will be 15+ hours of leadership training as well as 70 companies from all over the country that are registered to be at the Trade Show. This includes 3-Platinum sponsors, 1-Gold sponsor, 7-Silver sponsors, and 10-Bronze sponsors with many companies still trying to register and get in! Marie is also working on an $8,000 Technology Sponsorship with HarborTech and their partner companies. They have been an awesome sponsor at our recent events.

I will end my final President’s Message by saying it has been an honor being your President and I thank you for all the support throughout my tenure. I hope to see you all at the Annual Conference and the Awards Banquet as I pass the presidency to Chief Skinner.

Matt Griffin

Solutions Specialist for Virtual Reality

Topic: “The Journey to Midnight"

Matt is a national speaker, mentor, and consultant who wants to change the culture around mental health and police, members of the military, Emergency Services, and Fire Fighters. The very people protecting society are the ones least likely to get the help they need and deserve because of a culture that stigmatizes PTSD, compassion burnout, and addiction. He didn’t just find love and the light. He found God. And now he wants to make sure other officers, emergency services personnel, and veterans know they’re loved, there’s light, and suicide is not the answer.

Matt has authored the #1 Amazon bestselling book “The Journey to Midnight;" his memoir about his childhood journey from the inner city and poverty, to a lacrosse scholarship at Morristown-Beard, one of the richest, most prestigious high schools in the country, to the US Navy, then a career as a law enforcement officer and undercover cop.
