June 30, 2021

As our celebration of the 4th of July approaches, it’s tempting to look back on the past 18 months and feel deeply discouraged about the course our nation is taking. It would be easy to become cynical and jaded following our bout with one daunting crisis after another. It would also be easy to dismiss the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, ice storms, and violent protests took on all of us during this extended season of challenge. Even so, Independence Day reminds us that we stand on the sacrifices of the many who gave everything to secure our liberty. Their legacy is now in our hands to protect, preserve, and advance. I count it an incredible privilege to serve the members of the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police. In the midst of relentless and unfair criticism, you responded to each and every trial with character, integrity, and resilience. Your leadership and the work of your officers is remarkable and you should know that the vast majority of Oregonians are supportive and grateful! As we all take off our masks and life begins to return to normal, I hope you take time to recover and enjoy family and friends over the 4th of July weekend. I’m confident that we will re-emerge from this time with a renewed energy for excellence in policing leadership. Paul Tsongas said it well…“America is hope. It is compassion. It is excellence. It is valor.” I am thankful that these words are true of the members of the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police.

Our apologies if we inadvertently miss an opportunity to highlight a new chief. It seems that leadership transition at agencies is a constantly moving target and sometimes this information passes by us unaware. Thanks for your understanding of this predicament.

The OACP congratulates Chief Rock Rakosi (Myrtle Point PD) on his retirement after 25 years in law enforcement! Chief Rakosi began his career in Tigard in 1996 and transitioned to Myrtle Point in 1997 where he rose in rank to become the chief in 2003. Chief Rakosi has been a faithful member of the OACP since 2003, serving on a number of committees and as OACP president in 2015. The OACP appreciates and values his partnership over the years and wishes him a happy and fulfilling retirement.
