The Sandy Police Department and the Thornton Family would like to thank everyone for their support and their words of encouragement.
Sergeant Garret Thornton was hit multiple times by gunfire on May 31, 2026. Sgt. Thornton is recovering after surgery. Sgt. Thornton sustained injuries to his left hand, right arm and his right leg. All of those surgeries were successful and although his recovery will be long, he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Oregon Association Chiefs of Police extends congratulations and appreciation to Chief Justin Ivens on his retirement following a distinguished career of service with the Medford Police Department.
Chief Ivens began his law enforcement career with the department in 1995 and spent the next three decades serving the Medford community in a variety of roles, including Police Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief, and ultimately Chief of Police. His progression through the ranks reflects a career dedicated to public service, professional growth, and leadership.
Since becoming an OACP member in 2017, Chief Ivens has been a participating member on multiple committees, including the Intergovernmental and Legislative Committee and the Scholarship Committee. His involvement has helped support the Association's mission and the continued development of law enforcement professionals across Oregon.
On behalf of the OACP and its members, we thank Chief Ivens for his many years of service to his community, his profession, and the Association. We wish him and his family all the best as he begins this well-earned next chapter and look forward to the positive impact he will continue to make in the years ahead.
The OACP also extends its appreciation to District 11 Representative Chief Warren Hensman (pictured above, right with Chief Justin Ivens (Ret.) left) for presenting Chief Justin Ivens’ plaque on behalf of the Association. We are grateful for his support in recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of our members.

The OACP congratulates Chief Trevor Arnold on his appointment as Chief of Police for the Medford Police Department.
Chief Arnold brings nearly three decades of experience with MPD, having begun his career with the organization in 1998 as a Community Service Officer. Over the years, he has served in every rank within the department, including Police Officer, Master Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief, and now Chief of Police. His appointment reflects a career dedicated to serving the Medford community and the profession of law enforcement.
As Deputy Chief since 2021, Chief Arnold helped oversee department operations, strategic initiatives, major investigations, and regional public safety partnerships. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized as a collaborative leader with a deep understanding of both the organization and the community it serves.
On behalf of the OACP and its members across Oregon, we congratulate Chief Arnold on this significant achievement and wish him continued success as he leads the Medford Police Department into its next chapter.
