McMinnville's Chief of Police and OACP's
Current Past President Matt Scales.

1. What is a piece of advice you wish you could have told your younger self?

I would have told my younger self to not be afraid to fail. I grew up trying to be a perfectionist and would routinely beat myself up when I didn’t perform well at something. Having to be the perfectionist probably kept me from trying new experiences. Failing is growing and failing is okay!

2. Is there a particular person, movie, book, or experience that has influenced you? Tell us about it.
My mother and father… They influenced me more than anything. Growing up I would see my father being laid off from his work (he was a welder, and a very good one) and things were obviously tight financially for our family. Growing up I would always see my dad and mom going the extra mile for our family, and still finding a way to make ends meet, either through odd jobs or a second job. It influenced me to always find a way through difficult times and persevere.

3. If given a free afternoon (or evening) how would you spend it?
I absolutely love spending time on Devils Lake with my wife and family. That is the place I go to escape and feel energized. The moon on the water or the sunrises on the lake make me feel young again.

4. What was an activity you enjoyed when you were 10-ish?
I absolutely loved sports, no doubt about it. I loved playing baseball, basketball and football with my twin brother. We pushed each other constantly, and I loved the competition and the rush of doing something well and being successful.

 5. Tell your fellow association members something they might not know about you.
I attended the University of Portland and played baseball on scholarship, and that my freshman and junior years we went to the NCAA tournament. In both years of the tournament we played the eventual national champions (1989 Wichita State 1991 University of Miami). After my senior year I played one season of single A baseball in the Pioneer League (way too many long bus rides.)

We asked Chief Scales if he would send us a few pictures to choose from. When we received these three we couldn't resist posting all of them!

As a 'Gresham Gopher' in 1988, Matt played in the shortstop position.

Chief Scales competed as a second baseman and shortstop at the University of Portland from 1989 - 1992.

Second baseman Scales goes for the double play at first base. When asked if he got the runner out, unfortunately he could not remember. We like to think he did, and that his team won because of it!

Tips and tools for making your association experience a smooth one.

MEMBER DIRECTORY SEARCH

Looking for a Chief? Or your District Rep? Or a Retired Member? Look no further than OACP’s Member Directory Search. Here are additional things you can search for:

•    Search for members by name
•    Search for all Chief association members
•    Find members at certain agencies or in specific board districts
•    Search Board representatives
•    Search for members on individual committees
•    Search members who serve at departments of certain city sizes
•    and more...

You can find the Directory Search Tool by logging in to the Members Only area and scrolling over Community (upper ribbon). To view an already compiled list of member profiles, scroll over View Entire Member Directory and you'll see four drop-downs: one for each member type including Interested Retirees. These lists are in alphabetical order and list everyone in that group.

We hope you'll use this tool to get connected to fellow OACP members. See something out of place? Please let us know.

Training Refresher

Each week this summer we'll be looking back at past training and feature a presentation that can be accessed on our training platform. Consider viewing one of the highlighted videos (or having someone at your agency do so) for additional training credit.

Core Performance: Managing Personal Energy for Balance & Productivity"
Presented by:  Bill McAlpine

Core Performance is centered around managing human energy for peak performance. Participants will learn how to operate differently to successfully meet demands without compromise.
Our work with high performers around the world informs us that the only way our clients can be their best is to consider how they are growing capabilities and building skill in 4 distinct but interdependent CORE’s in the human system that influence how we show up when it matters most.
Core Performance is based on decades of work in the world of high performance in sport, special operations, surgeons, pilots, elite law enforcement and leaders from the private and public sectors.

This  4-hour presentation can be found in the "F6|Leadership" package on the Training Center.
