Hello Friends: Well, we are in some crazy times aren’t we? I want to share some thoughts with you about the last several weeks and give you a bit of a deep dive and behind the scenes look into the recent legislative process to explain a bit about what challenges OACP and OSSA recently faced.

Many of you know better than I, but as a life member of OACP and a 42 year veteran of Oregon law enforcement, I can tell you with some modicum of certainly that this is the most challenging time our profession has faced in decades.

As Law Enforcement Leaders we want our organizations to reflect our communities’ desires with policing that is fair, equitable and just. These measures will help to ensure that only individuals with the highest ethical, professional and moral standards will serve our communities as law enforcement officers.

Our associations have an established history of working in partnership with the legislature on behalf of all Oregonians. We want to provide relevant guidance, advice, experience and insight on the critical issue of police accountability.

Chief Jim Porter retires from Bend PD
OACP President Jim Ferraris presented retiring Chief Porter with the OACP plaque in recognition of his contributions to our association and his 12 years of membership with the OACP. Congratulations to Chief Porter on his retirement!


OACP College Scholarships

 Consider encouraging a student to apply for an OACP college scholarship.
Applications need to be submitted by the end of the year, and are awarded soon after.

Each year, the OACP provides five $1000 college scholarships to students who plan to enter a law enforcement or other criminal justice career field or are currently in the fields taking college courses to further their careers. The OACP is committed to promoting professionalism and values the presence and contributions of educated men and women in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. To further our commitment, the OACP provides competitive college scholarships for qualifying students.

Senators push to limit transfer of military-grade equipment to police

A bipartisan group of senators introduced a proposal on Monday to limit the transfer of military-grade equipment to local law enforcement agencies, a practice that has come under increased scrutiny amid protests against police brutality sparked by George Floyd's death last month.
