New Chiefs Dinner
The New Chiefs Dinner has become a favorite OACP tradition where we gather all the new chiefs (from the past year), along with the Executive Board, and enjoy a relaxing evening together over dinner. It provides just the right setting for getting to know one another. One of the questions we ask is what they would have done for work if they hadn't chosen law enforcement as their career, and tell us something we might not know about them.
Chief Matt Scales (McMinnville PD), OACP President - Swinging for the fences early on, Chief Scales played baseball for the University of Portland and in the Minor League. Teaching would've been a second career choice for Matt.
Chief Cory Chase, Cottage Grove PD - previously served as Washougal School Board board President. Had LE not been his calling, Chief Chase would've pursued coaching and teaching high school students.
Chief Stephen Lopez, Sunriver PD - reminisced on being a high school rugby coach - leading a group of young women to win a National Championship. Before considering LE, Chief Lopez contemplated the medical field.
Chief Marcus Mendoza, Estacada PD - having served our nation for 4 years in the Marines. Law Enforcement was the only thing that pulled Chief Mendoza away from the military and his desire to fly helicopters.
Chief Jim Hamilton, Eagle Point PD - You'll get a kick out of knowing Chief Hamilton has studied Karate for 23 years - even competing internationally. His career started in the fire service before moving to Law Enforcement.
Chief Mike Krantz (Bend PD), OACP Secretary/Treasurer - as a previous high school la crosse coach, Chief Krantz would've loved to be an Athletic Director if he'd not pursued law enforcement.
Chief Mark Waddell, Junction City PD - as a life long member of Junction City, Chief Waddell loves to give back to his community. Coaching High School football would've been a secondary career choice for Mark.
Chief Jason Harvey, Corvallis PD - coming from a family of tradesmen, Chief Harvey would likely follow in a similar field if he'd not become a police officer. Having been born on Feb 29, he's grateful he will get to celebrate this year!
Kevin Campbell, OACP Executive Director - says if he hadn't ended up trying to influence legislators in the halls of the capitol building, he would've tried to influence people from the pulpit where he was considering a career as a pastor.
Chief Marty Case, Cow Creek PD - looking for a way to serve one way or another, Chief Case would've joined the military if he'd not pursued law enforcement. Loves coaching football and especially the linemen where he believes where the important work is done.
Chief Cal Mitts, North Bend PD - given a second career choice, Chief Mitts would have continued his career in the Armed Forces - having previously served in the Army. He believes his claim to fame is that at one point he had the longest beard of any OACP member!
Chief Mark Daniel (Mt. Angel PD), OACP 1st Vice President - would've kept the party hoppin' as a DJ and kept that same group safe - if he'd chosen another career as a bouncer. Chief Daniel always wanted to be a cop though, so maybe in retirement.
Chief Andrew Copeland, Keizer PD - currently coaches football at Salem Academy and likely would've pursued coaching full time if not for his desire to be a police officer. We thought it was pretty impressive when someone pointed out that he came in 1st place at the US Police & Fire Competition years ago.
Chief Joshua Gregory, Gearhart PD - had he not chosen to serve his community as a police officer, Chief Gregory would likely be serving hot meals from his own restaurant (since he loves to cook) - while maybe serenading his diners with guitar and song, both of which we learned he enjoys doing!
Chief John Carter, Reedsport PD - Loves limousines, has owned three of them, and has chauffeured the likes of Lilly Tomlin and professional athletes. If he hadn't chosen a career in law enforcement, perhaps he'd have enjoyed chauffeuring many more famous people around in a fleet of limousines.
