Topic: Racial Intelligence Training & Engagement (RITE) for Law Enforcement
RITE will help us reinforce a culture of treating everyone fairly, in a professional manner. Learning to value others, is key to building a professional workplace culture that will be passed on for years to come. The training is designed to look at cultural diversity through a new lens, improving implicit bias and communication to de-escalate high-pressure situations. Racial Intelligence Training puts officer wellness on the front line, improving officer wellness and career resiliency. Teaching supervisors and officers to gauge their emotional state so they do not react negatively is especially important in high-pressure situations. This benefits the officer and the agency by improving department morale and accountability, as well as building community relations and trust.

TRAINING CORNER

Each week we'll be looking back at past training and featuring a presentation that can be accessed on our training platform. Consider watching one of the highlighted videos (or having someone at your agency do so) for additional training credit.

Heart Disease: #1 Killer of Active and Retired Cops
Presented by Dr. Ben Stone

In this informative presentation from the 2022 Annual Conference, Dr. Stone reveals that the number one killer of active and retired law enforcement officers is heart disease. The average age of a police officer who suffers a heart attack is 46, and the life expectancy of men and women in uniform is more than 22 years less than the general population. Published data shows that, between the ages of 55 and 60, the chance of a civilian dying from a heart attack is 1.6%. However, within populations of police officers and fire fighters, it is 56%. This 2 hour presentation gives an in-depth overview of the early detection model, specific to public safety, that he and his team are creating in an effort to permanently change these shocking statistics. You'll find this presentation in the "F6|General/Other" package on the Training Center.

Chief Kevin Martinez sang at Carlton's National Night Out event.

Our mission is to highlight the good work Oregon law enforcement is doing in their communities. We scroll Facebook daily to find photos we can share on fb and use here in the Weekly Update newsletter, but we know we can often miss one of your posts. If you have something to share that you think fellow members would enjoy seeing or hearing about, send it our way. We'd be delighted to share the wins!
