With President Chief Skinner hailing from Tracktown USA, we thought we'd take advantage and embrace the track & field theme (and all the more with Hayward Field being the first place in the U.S. to hold the World Championships). We are using the Fall conference to launch this athletic vibe. We hope you like it.

Meet one of our conference presenters (livestreamed from the Netherlands):

Sidney Dekker
Professor, Director - Safety Science Innovation Lab | Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia

Topic: "Understanding 'Human Error' and Restorative Just Culture"

Sidney Dekker (PhD Ohio State University, USA, 1996) is Professor and Director of the Safety Science Innovation Lab at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, and Professor at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University in the Netherlands. Sidney has lived and worked in seven countries across four continents and won worldwide acclaim for his groundbreaking work in human factors and safety. He coined the term ‘Safety Differently’ in 2012, which has since turned into a global movement for change. It encourages organizations to declutter their bureaucracy and provide people freedom-in-a-frame to make things go well—and to offer compassion, restoration and learning when they don’t. Read More

Topic: "Understanding 'Human Error' and Restorative Just Culture"

In his presentation, Dr. Dekker will help you:

  • Recognize the old and new view of human/organizational performance, and Safety I versus Safety II;
  • Know what to do when others blame ‘human error’ and see people as a problem to control;
  • Plot rigorous steps for your force to engage with the new view of ‘human error', including managing hindsight and outcome bias when judging officer performance;
  • Understand the nuances and difficulties of intervening and speaking up in dynamic situations with rank and risk involved;
  • Appreciate the limits and perils of retribution and being quick to judge when responding to officers who are involved in undesirable situations and incidents;
  • Discuss the advantages of restorative just cultures for reporting, officer engagement, psychological safety, learning and safety improvement.
